"Food wastage in the world has increased by 50% over the last 35 years. At the same time, the percentage of destitute persons in the EU, especially in the countries that have been hit by the fiscal crisis, has increased significantly. Europe must manage its resources more efficiently. It is important to note that, according to a recent study, Europeans and North Americans waste, on average, between 95 and 115 kilograms of food a year, as opposed to between six and 11 kilograms in sub-Saharan Africa. In developed countries, most wastage is concentrated in the final stages of distribution and consumption, owing, above all, to the overabundance of food produced, whereas in developing countries, it is concentrated at the early stages, owing to the lack of advanced agricultural practices, effective transport systems, infrastructures and so on. More efficient management of food will guarantee more efficient distribution of it and food for those who do not have it. I therefore endorse the European Parliament’s call on the Council, the Commission and the Member States, especially in the midst of the economic crisis, to adopt strategies in this direction and to propose that 2013 be declared the European Year against Food Waste, which is why I voted in favour of this particular report."@en1
