"I welcome this report into food wastage. Reducing food wastage is a major issue across the European Union. In the United Kingdom alone, we throw away 7.2 million tonnes of food from our homes every year, and 4.4 million tonnes of this food could have been eaten. This issue has far-reaching implications for families across the UK, especially in the current economic climate. Food wastage costs the average family with children GBP 680 a year, the equivalent of GBP 50 a month. This brings the value of food wasted in the UK each year to a grand total of GBP 12 billion. Not only are there serious financial implications for the consumer in relation to food wastage, but there are also far-reaching issues surrounding the wastage of water, energy and packaging used in food production, transportation and storage. All of this goes to waste when we throw away perfectly good food."@en1
