The European Commission’s communication recognises the paramount role that space plays and marks a first step on the way to an integrated space policy, which will be founded upon the new legal basis set out in the Treaty of Lisbon. The report being voted on today supports the position of the Commission, which proposes strengthening European space infrastructure and calls for increased research in the space sector. Europe already plays a leading role in the strategic sector of satellite communications technology.
