"The World Forum for Harmonisation of Vehicle Regulations (working group established under Article 29) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) offers a unique framework for globally harmonised regulations on vehicles. The benefits of such harmonised regulations are tangible in road safety, environmental protection and trade. Currently, 126 regulations have been agreed within the UNECE framework, and the European Union has acceded to 106 UNECE regulations to date. Two new draft regulations have been drawn up, which are ready to be voted on: the first concerns the safety of pedestrians, and the second, light emitting diode (LED) light sources. I think it is right for Parliament to approve the draft Council decision on the opinion of the EU regarding the draft UNECE regulation concerning the safety of pedestrians and also the draft concerning LED light sources because these UNECE regulations will allow for the application of the same standards in many countries, taking away red tape and allowing European industry to compete more widely and easily."@en1
