However, 79 million people in the European Union live below the poverty line, and 16 million of them have received food aid from charitable institutions. Food security is a basic human right that is achieved through the availability, accessibility and temporal stability of healthy, sufficient, adequate and nutritious food. The issue of food waste should be addressed from the standpoint of resource efficiency.
