"Mr President, yesterday the Legal Service of the European Commission found that the new Hungarian Constitution infringes the European Treaties. Our view is that this infringement must be stopped, preferably with new amendments in a positive direction by that country’s government which, as we have heard today, the Hungarian Government is willing to do, or with legal measures by the European Commission in line with the Treaties which make provision for compatibility between national laws and the European . This position is not directed against the Hungarian people, whose integrity we fully respect, nor is it directed against Hungarian national sovereignty; it is directed against policies that infringe the rights of citizens in light of the directive on equal treatment at work or the existence of an independent central bank or independent data protection authority. Even though the focus is on these three points, this should not be used as an excuse to overlook the other constitutional changes.
