Under no circumstances can we allow this crisis to be a pretext for neglecting health and safety at work. Workers’ suffering cannot be sacrificed on the altar of austerity. How could we be anything but shocked at the following statistics?
According to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, 168 000 people die every year in Europe as a result of work-related accidents and diseases. More than half of these are cancers and a quarter are cardiovascular diseases. In addition, 7 million people are injured in work-related accidents."@en1
