"This is an extremely valuable report concerning an important area: occupational health and safety. This is an area where we have seen a steady deterioration in the situation of workers, no matter what their profession. One example of this would be the rise in the number of suicides in the workplace or the death of some workers through burn-out. In addition, a number of legislative amendments have been introduced, under pressure from employers, which exacerbate the situation of workers and their state of physical and mental health. The observations made in the report are alarming and highlight the need for immediate action to change the situation.
I regard as vital the recommendation made by the European Commission, which is to facilitate the development of European health and safety standards in companies, emphasising the need for cooperation from Member States in not only researching the causes of occupational accidents, but also in sharing best practices. I also regard as being just as important the call made to the European Commission and Member States to propose measures for adapting working conditions better for people with cancer or other occupational and chronic diseases. I voted to adopt this report as I firmly believe in the need for it and for the measures proposed by its authors."@en1
