The EU strategy for a new partnership with Central Asia was adopted in June 2007 in order to give greater recognition to the increasing importance of the EU’s relations with Central Asia. Following an initial progress report in 2008, the European Commission and Council adopted a joint progress report in June 2010. The aim of this was to assess the strategy’s implementation and provide the initial details on the future direction of priority action areas, taking account of developments in the region and in neighbouring countries. To that end, I believe that it is important to stress the need to re-assess the strategy and to focus it on the main challenges, which are respect for human rights, the rule of law, water scarcity, energy supply and regional security."@en1
