"Madam President, the European Maritime Safety Agency has already demonstrated that certain tasks, such as satellite monitoring systems, can be carried out more efficiently at European level. In order to develop innovative applications and services, improve existing applications and services, and create a border-free European maritime area, the agency should tap the potential offered by the EGNOS, GALILEO and GMES programmes. With a view to achieving the single market in the EU, short-distance maritime transport should be used more, and we should use the Blue Belt project to reduce the administrative burden on maritime transport. The agency should also assist the Commission and Member States in developing and implementing the EU’s ‘e-maritime’ initiative, which is designed to improve the efficiency of the maritime sector through better use of information technologies. In line with its remit, the agency should also intervene outside its territory by promoting the EU’s maritime safety policy by means of cooperation through research."@en1
