"The last ten years following the attacks of 11 September have been marked by the ‘war on terror’. Although these attacks occurred on American soil, preparations for them were made in part in Europe, and other attacks have occurred since then on European soil. The EU is a potential target and the safety of its citizens is a major concern. The report presented today in plenary on the EU Counter-Terrorism Policy ‘welcomes’ the Commission communication and its four strands for the future: prevention of acts of terrorism, protection of people and infrastructure, pursuit of terrorist movements and the capacity to respond to post-attack situations. In accordance with the position of the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats), to which I belong, I voted against the joint amendment tabled to the document, which has replaced it."@en1
