"I support this motion because freedom and democracy in Russia are in the interest of Europe, its neighbourhood and Russia itself. Russia remains one of the EU’s most important partners and has veto power in the UN Security Council. As such, challenges on an international level, in particular, with regard to Syria and Iran, cannot be solved without a coordinated approach. As a member of the Council of Europe and the OSCE, Russia has committed itself to the principles of democracy and fundamental rights. Europe must express its strong concerns regarding disrespect for these principles in Russia. Election violations, treatment of peaceful protestors and the case of Sergei Magnitsky are some of the many vivid examples of Russia’s transgressions. Numerous irregularities in the recent elections reconfirm the need for Russia to comply with election standards set by the Council of Europe and the OSCE. Finally, Russia must work to resolve the so called ‘frozen conflicts’, including fulfilling its obligations in the ceasefire agreement with Georgia."@en1
