"I disagree with the rapporteur, Mr Lisek, on two issues. It is irresponsible of Parliament to call on the Member States to increase their defence budgets, while elsewhere, we insist on making savings and on budgetary discipline. We are in the midst of a severe economic and debt crisis. I would also say that the European Parliament should not adopt a position on funding for NATO or on how much European member countries of NATO should cover the costs of NATO. That is something which the NATO countries can adopt a position on in different forums. NATO and the EU are two separate organisations."@en1
