"Like other sectors, defence has not escaped successive cuts motivated by the financial crisis ravaging the European Union. However, it must be said that this sector is not the same as the others and that disinvestment here could have serious consequences for the security and defence of Member States. At a time when the United States of America, the primary guarantor of peace and democracy in the world since the Second World War, is aiming to redefine its strategic role at the global level and it is becoming increasingly clear that it needs to count on the involvement of its partners on missions that affect the security of all, reducing European investment in defence will reduce the quantity and quality of Europe’s military capacity. In truth, it is increasingly clear that the Union must accept its part of burden sharing amongst western democracies if we do not wish to follow a path towards irrelevance. Saying this does not mean encouraging wastefulness or, much less, warmongering. Europe cannot ignore a timeless rule: ."@en1
