With the adoption of this important report on reducing the amount of phosphorus used in domestic washing machine detergents, we are making a valuable contribution to the reduction of pollution in European water systems. Phosphorus from domestic laundry detergents, used to counteract the hardness of water, is a significant contributor to this type of ecological imbalance. A reduction in the amount of phosphorus used in household products at a European level will therefore help to protect our waters and will facilitate trade agreements with third countries in regional initiatives to clean up water, such as the Baltic Sea action plan and the Danube region strategy. The protection of Europe’s waters is a priority as well as a duty we owe to future generations."@en1
