"The European Union is known for its highly detailed legislation regarding the most varied fields of production. The aim of this regulation is often to protect consumers and, at other times, the environment and natural resources, as is the case with this regulation on the use of phosphates in household laundry detergents.
While I recognise that such protection is desirable, I must reiterate that imposing restrictions concerning the use of phosphates on the manufacturers of household laundry detergents will make sense only if the same rules also prevent the entry into the EU of imported detergents that violate these very same rules. We cannot go on demanding more from our manufacturers and industries without imposing similar rules for imported products."@en1
