We are voting for this report, whose purpose is to clarify issues relating to descriptions, flavourings and improved information to consumers in this area. It also proposes to ban the use of potentially misleading or ambiguous descriptions such as ‘natural fruit juice’, which might lead consumers to think, wrongly, that a juice is extracted directly from the fruit, when, in some cases, it is produced from concentrate. That is why there are currently difficulties with, for example, distinguishing ‘juices’ from ‘nectars’, and why the presence or not of added sugar is important, so that consumers can make choices according to their specific needs and wishes. For these reasons, information campaigns on the different categories of juice would be welcome.
However, there are a number of concerns, also expressed in the report, about the delegation of powers to the European Commission, namely, in relation to changes in permitted ingredients. This was the area which presented the greatest problems during negotiations with the Council and which, for this very reason, should not be amended using delegated acts. The proposal for a directive provides for an 18-month period for introducing the new legislation, which enables the industry to make the necessary changes."@en1
