"Mr President, the financial crisis means we need to make cuts to public spending even in the area of defence. In the UK, this was made worse by the fact that the last Labour government left the present coalition with GBP 38 billion of unfunded commitments. However, in the field of defence, as everywhere else, I do not believe the answer is ‘more Europe’. ‘More Europe’ means more costs as EU bureaucrats create super-structures, with super-budgets to match.
We must avoid expensive duplication of NATO structures and ensure that the EU has nothing to do with defence. I am proud of the British armed forces, which are a symbol of our national sovereignty and security. No matter how bad the economic crisis may be, Britain will continue to defend itself, as I would expect all sovereign nations to do."@en1
