"Mr President, it is a very rare thing for all sides of the House to be completely satisfied with anything. I believe, however, that this compromise is a very good one for the consumer because it establishes freedom in decision making. This is something that we always wanted to achieve with food labelling. We are not looking to nanny anyone. We do not want to tell people what foods to buy or what drinks, whether a fruit nectar or a fruit juice. What we do want, however, is to provide the basis to enable consumers to make their decision based on reliable information. The compromise before us today establishes this freedom.
Something we definitely need to do in parallel with this legislation is to run an information campaign. We need to educate people. This principle, health literacy, is one that we must bring to life. If people assume that a fruit juice with nothing on the pack to indicate that no sugar has been added actually contains no sugar, this means that they do not know enough. After all, a fruit juice must, by its nature, contain sugar. Not all consumers are aware of this and I believe that we – the European Parliament and the European institutions – really need to catch up in this regard. We need to empower people to make such decisions."@en1
