"Mr President, Baroness Ashton, ladies and gentlemen, the impunity with which the Syrian authorities have slaughtered 5 000 people or more is, obviously, intolerable and cries out for revenge. The way in which President Assad is shirking the responsibility for this is grotesque. The inability of the UN Security Council to adopt a clear resolution on this matter is frustrating, especially as more violence now seems imminent.
The EU should continue its efforts to isolate the regime, to expand sanctions, to seek allies in the region. A regime that so brutally attacks its own people will fall, sooner or later. The only drawback is that we do not know if this will happen quickly or only after a bloody civil war has been waged with an opposition that feels compelled to arm itself.
It is therefore essential that, in a country that has never known any real opposition, we help the opposition to organise itself in a way that will ensure all parties and communities feel represented. Baroness Ashton, I think that we, as the European Union, could help ensure that this opposition becomes stronger and more credible and that it is well organised."@en1
