"Mr President, Baroness Ashton, we are all agreed and have been for some months now. Mr al-Assad no longer has any legitimacy and must step down. The extent of the repression against his own people is totally unacceptable.
After those made by the European Union and the United States, I welcome the Arab League’s decision to adopt coercive measures against the Syrian regime and to look for the most appropriate means for protecting civilians. We must continue to work together with the Arab League and Turkey. The Syrian regime’s days are numbered, but we must keep up the pressure on this disgraceful regime, which has already killed nearly 5 000 people. I call on the European Union and the international community to take urgent and effective measures to protect the Syrian people.
Furthermore, the Security Council’s silence is scandalous. The EU-Russia Summit this weekend is an opportunity to highlight the human consequences of this repression and to get Russia to review its position at the United Nations. If there is no end to these abuses soon, the country could plunge into civil war, and the region as a whole will suffer the fallout.
Baroness Ashton, I urge you to continue your efforts so that the aspirations expressed by the Syrian people can be achieved in what we all hope will be the not so distant future."@en1
