"Mr President, I had to leave the Chamber temporarily at the end of the last debate to answer a constituent call, yet Baroness Ashton had a little bit of a dig at me. Baroness Ashton, I am sorry that you consider it so important that Members actually have to be in the Chamber to listen to you, but you are not very popular here, are you? There are 23 Members here, less than 4%. You really should not upset me, as otherwise you would probably lose me as a regular attendee.
But that does not diminish what I actually want to say about Russia, which is a rather serious situation. But does it not really show the limitations? I could characterise Russia as a big angry bear that we are trying to teach some manners to. The elections were a disgrace. They should be re-run, as they do not come up to any level of democratic accountability, but then what does the EU know about that? I believe that the Russians call the EU a temporary phenomenon; well hopefully, they are right about that. Is it not the reality that there is absolutely nothing you can do? We can talk with them, but they will do whatever they want. It just shows the limitations of your position."@en1
