"Mr President, first of all, I would like to welcome the former Russian Prime Minister, Mikhail Kasyanov, who is sitting here in the gallery listening to our debates. There are a few items not included in the resolution we will vote on this week. Firstly, the Medvedev-Putin tandem and their party United Russia lost the State Duma elections. They not only lost around 80 seats in the State Duma, but
lost the elections. Blatant violations, which were an integral part of the election campaign and which were evident and recorded by international observers and independent Russian observers on polling day, and vote rigging bear witness to the fact that the elections in Russia were neither free nor fair. Many Russians were denied the constitutional right to vote and stand in the elections. Secondly, the people of Russia have taken to its streets and city squares in protest. As we have already heard today, Mikhail Gorbachev, the first and last President of the Soviet Union, is calling for fresh elections to be organised. I believe that more notice should be taken of this. Finally, Madam High Representative, tomorrow you will talk to our Russian partners …."@en1
