"Madam President, in contrast to civil rights, human rights are subjective and apply to everyone on an equal basis. They include the right to life, protection against torture and freedom of opinion, to name just a few. So much for the theory. What is happening in reality? In Egypt, the Coptic Christians are being massacred, while the EU stands by. The People’s Republic of China has made a commitment to implementing human rights, but is treating them with contempt, while the EU stands by. Authoritarian states in the Gulf region are pretending to criticise Syria in order to divert attention from their own problems at home. It is a case of double standards being applied, Baroness Ashton. It is nice to be able to talk about safeguarding human rights, but your words need to be followed up with actions. The EU has enough opportunities to exert foreign policy pressure. We must have the courage to make the most of these opportunities."@en1
