"Mr President, today, in these times of crisis, when Member States are making cuts to budgets, it is only natural that less money is allocated to the defence sector. We must therefore coordinate and plan joint national defence, economise on the spending of funds and remove duplication when implementing a common defence policy. In these times of escalating extremism, populism, xenophobia and terrorism in Europe, a common defence policy by individual states is more necessary than ever. I wish to intercede not only for a common defence policy, but also for joint and coordinated control of the performance of the individual components of defence, in order to prevent abuses of, for example, the defence intelligence service, as occurred recently in Slovakia, where this service abused its powers and listened in to its own citizens."@en1
