"Mr President, there can be no doubt that the deep economic crisis is putting a great deal of pressure on national defence budgets and, by extension, on the European defence industry. Everyone, even the Member States facing extensive specific and inelastic national security requirements, such as Greece on its eastern borders, are seeking realistic and effective solutions based on a lower cost/higher performance approach. Under these difficult circumstances, the truth is that there are not many options. Thus, more extensive and fundamental European defence cooperation is a one-way street. However, it is an uphill one-way street. The application of cooperation and synergies is not a simple endeavour, because defence policy forms part of the hard core of the national sovereignty of states. That is why we also need to work with decisiveness and flexibility and why we must support the pooling and sharing approach. At the same time, of course, interoperability, complementarity and, of course, rationalisation of defence spending are particularly important. In Greece, we are trying to achieve this but, believe me, it is very difficult, because we face a real threat. With these thoughts, I wish to congratulate Mr Lisek on his exceptional report."@en1
