"Mr President, many European countries have actually cut their defence expenditure because of the euro crisis, including my own country, Finland. This is very worrying. A government’s main function is to be responsible for its citizens’ freedom and security. No other function can take priority over this. It is nothing less than immoral to cut funding in this most important area while billions are being squandered on futile support packages in the name of a wasteful bailout policy. Cuts in defence appropriations also make Europe’s already minimal role in global policy even less important. With the Arab Spring this year, for example, we have seen that the need for military strength is still relevant today, right on our doorstep. Cooperation on defence is generally a good thing, but Member States and EU institutions have to be constantly reminded that cooperation cannot take the place of national efforts – it can only complement them."@en1
