"I voted in favour of the own-initiative report. Non-tariff barriers, which appear in various forms (anti-dumping duties, exchange rate manipulations, methods of import valuation, customs surcharges and so forth), are technical, complicated and sensitive from a political and social point of view, because certain measures are applied by governments in the general interest. However, some NTBs exert a restrictive effect on the ability of European undertakings to penetrate foreign markets. The EU’s new trade policy within the framework of the EU 2020 strategy should therefore be more outward-looking, so that, where feasible, the Commission can enter into agreement with the EU’s main trading partners in order to eliminate any restrictive and protectionist arrangements that cause commercial distortions."@en1
