"I am voting in favour of the report on trade and investment barriers because it indicates practical solutions for how we can achieve more free trade and points out the damaging effects of protectionism. As a liberal, I believe that free trade should be promoted and protectionism should be combated. In the first round, we must adopt free trade agreements with China and other important trading partners, which, in time, may become full WTO agreements. Unfortunately, things are heading in the wrong direction in these areas, as the report points out. Lastly, I would like to mention that I am not keen on the frequent references to reciprocity, as to my mind, this is another word for protectionism. Overall, however, the report is heading in the right direction. In the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, I am working on getting as many references to reciprocity and protectionism removed or reduced as much as possible in the European Parliament’s reports, and this has also been successful this time. The result is therefore palatable."@en1
