"I voted in favour of Robert Sturdy’s report on trade and investment barriers. As rapporteur for the opinion of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection on this subject, I am pleased that the European Parliament is establishing clear guidelines for the European Commission to follow in order to provide European companies with the means to compete on a level playing field with their foreign counterparts. This is particularly important because, by 2015, 90% of global growth will be generated outside the European Union. It is therefore necessary to clearly identify the barriers that hamper trade between the European Union and its trading partners, and to remove them in order to help our companies gain market share abroad. Reforming European trade policy according to the principles of reciprocity, equity and fair competition should be one of our priorities. I am also pleased to see that the European Parliament supports the idea of considering, at European level, an evaluation of the impact of foreign direct investment on the internal market so as to forestall any potential adverse effects on European innovation and know-how in certain strategic sectors. This was the aim of one of the amendments I tabled."@en1
