"This report concerns the barriers to trade and investment in the European Union, which hinder competitiveness, economic growth and thus wealth creation and employment. As the rapporteur, Mr Sturdy, says, ‘open and fair trade is the best way to ensure and maintain a level playing field for European businesses competing at global level’. The issue of barriers to trade and investment has been subject to a multilevel approach: the Transatlantic Economic Council has decided to strengthen cooperation between the US and the EU, in accordance with the Trade Principles for Information and Communication Technology Services. Progress has also been noted in the automotive sector, and a high-level conference is expected to take place. All this shows that the elimination of barriers to trade is a priority for the EU. Although I agree with the opening up recommended in the report, and therefore voted for it, I also believe that a mechanism should be created under the World Trade Organisation to speed up the elimination of non-tariff barriers in a peaceful yet efficient way, or by regulatory measures on trade that limit imports."@en1
