"The freedom of trade and rejection of protectionism are defining elements of the European project, such as it is. The EU is based on freedom of movement within its borders, but also on freedom of trade and investment with third countries. This is the correct model, and I am not asking for it to be reviewed. However, as the French President rightly pointed out only last week in Marseille, we cannot impose quality standards on our producers and industries if these are not then met by the products that we import. In the same way, we cannot be a more open space, yet fail to see our openness to imports and foreign investment reciprocated with acceptance by other important markets that Europeans want to enter. Finally, free trade agreements, which are important and opportune, need to be reciprocal, as otherwise we will be condemning the European economy to a slow death."@en1
