"By Non-tariff barriers, which were first discussed as part of WTO multilateral trade negotiations in 1979, we mean all trade restricting measures which limit imports. I believe that open and, above all, fair trade is the best way to ensure and maintain a level playing field for EU businesses competing at the global level. The bilateral and plurilateral negotiations are also a good opportunity for the Commission to step up regulatory cooperation with the EU’s main trading partners. In my opinion, the Commission should act proactively to reduce the restrictive impact of non-tariff barriers on the capacity of European businesses to access foreign markets. This shall be a priority of the new EU trade policy under the Europe 2020 strategy. Furthermore, with respect to free trade agreements (FTAs) between the EU and third countries, it is vital to make sure that these provide sufficient reciprocity in market access and mutual benefits to both parties. The ultimate aim should be to limit disputes and the associated costs of those for European businesses, without prejudice to the quality of the resulting regulatory environment."@en1
