Since April 2011, he has been Dean of Chamber III and a member of the Administrative Committee. Previously, he had worked as an auditor at the Belgian Court of Auditors, as a mayor, then as a Member of the European Parliament and as adviser to the Finance Minister, and finally as Minister for Defence and Minister for Agriculture and SMUs. Fulfilling these functions has led him to obtain unmatched professional expertise. During his work at the Court of Auditors, he has so far drafted five reports, and is currently responsible for the 2011 Statement of Assurance. In his statement, he stressed that all European taxpayers have the right to know how the European Union utilises its budget. An important aspect is that the candidate considers efficient cooperation with the European Parliament one of his key goals.
