"I voted in favour of Ms Sippel’s report on the right to information in criminal proceedings. I think it is quite right that, under the new legislation, those suspected of crimes within the European Union must be informed of their rights in a language they can understand. This measure is designed to ensure that all EU countries will inform anyone who is arrested or subject to a European arrest warrant of their basic rights during criminal proceedings.
Establishing common minimum standards on criminal proceedings guarantees better recognition of the fundamental rights of European citizens and also helps towards overcoming the limitations and problems that can arise between different judicial authorities in implementing the principle of mutual recognition in criminal matters."@en1
