"The requirement to set common minimum standards on the right to information in criminal proceedings across the European Union would ensure greater recognition of fundamental rights for EU citizens and contribute to overcoming the problems of implementing the principle of mutual recognition in criminal matters, due to the lack of trust between the authorities. This proposal aims for greater collaboration and legislative harmonisation through a gradual approach set out in the road map adopted on 30 November 2009. I am voting in favour of this proposal for a directive in order to ensure that the right to information is granted in an effective way."@en1
