"I voted in favour of this resolution because this directive will ensure that in criminal proceedings, all suspected or accused persons are able to exercise their right to a fair trial in all EU Member States, regardless of their legal status, citizenship or nationality. It should be noted that the right to information in criminal proceedings is one of many measures for ensuring a fair trial aimed at increasing confidence in the single EU area of justice. I therefore believe that it is advisable to at least set minimum standards which would facilitate the application of the principle of mutual recognition, thereby improving judicial cooperation between Member States."@en1
