"It is natural to inform anyone suspected or accused of committing an offence anywhere in the European Union of their procedural rights in a language that is easy to understand.
I am pleased that we have successfully introduced in this proposal the fact that suspects must be informed promptly about the following procedural rights at least: the right of access to a lawyer; any entitlement to legal advice free of charge and the conditions for obtaining it; the right to be informed of the charge made; the right to interpretation and translation.
Citizens can only fully exercise their rights if they are also aware of them. The adoption of this report within our institution highlights once again that the European Union’s aim is to strengthen its citizens’ fundamental rights."@en1
