"This report contains aspects on the right to information in criminal proceedings, which we value, especially as regards the right to interpretation and translation, the right to be informed of the charge and the right to access the case file. We would highlight the fact that these provisions are enshrined in the European Convention on the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR), so they should be upheld and complied with by the Member States, which are parties to the ECHR.
As that does not, regrettably, happen, the aim of this report is to attempt to strengthen mutual trust. This attempt is part of a broader process focusing, in this case, on so-called harmonisation of legal and criminal procedures. We know that many of these recurrent attempts at harmonisation by the EU often end up not protecting and safeguarding the rights and interests of the public, and even ignore the best practices and good examples of some of the Member States. In view of this, we shall see how this process evolves."@en1
