"The aim of the proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the right to information in criminal proceedings tabled by the Commission in July 2010 is to establish a series of common minimum standards relating to the right to information in criminal proceedings applicable throughout the European Union. That is, it aims to affirm the rights of suspects and accused persons to be informed of their rights. This information must be communicated in a simple and accessible language, orally or in writing, and in a language that they understand. This report amends the Commission proposal in order to ensure that the directive covers all cases of limitation of personal freedom, irrespective of how Member States qualify the proceedings according to which the suspect has been deprived of their liberty. I voted for this report for the above reasons."@en1
