"Criminal proceedings differ within the Union. An individual suspected or accused of having committed a criminal offence is not automatically informed of his or her rights in a clear and precise manner in every Member State. That is why I voted in favour of new European rules to guarantee the right to a fair trial. As well as being informed of his or her basic procedural rights (the right of access to a lawyer, the right to remain silent, the right to be assisted by an interpreter, and so on), the accused will receive a written Letter of Rights (the right to urgent medical care, the right to know how long he or she will be detained before being brought before a judicial authority, and so on)."@en1
