"I voted in favour of this resolution on the mobilisation of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) in favour of Italy to provide the sum of EUR 3 918 850 in commitment and payment appropriations. The EGF provides support for workers made redundant as a result of major structural changes in world trade patterns due to globalisation and the direct impact of the global financial and economic crisis and assists them with their reintegration into the labour market. In February 2011, Italy submitted an application to mobilise the EGF in respect of redundancies in 323 enterprises involved in the construction of buildings in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Italy argues that its construction sector has been severely affected by the global financial crisis. Loans to the construction sector or to individuals have been drastically reduced and demand for new houses has decreased due to declining consumer confidence and the lack of cash. According to the Commission’s assessment, the application fulfils the eligibility criteria set out in the EGF Regulation. I agree that the EGF should be mobilised in order to provide a financial contribution in response to the application submitted by Italy and to support the reintegration into the labour market of workers made redundant due to the global financial and economic crisis."@en1
