"Mr President, I would like to express my moderate optimism regarding the outcome of the Council meeting. I am glad that we have taken a step towards a ‘Europe of solidarity’. It is, however, just a small step, because there may be no ‘solidarity’ in a Europe where two big countries are trying to dictate all the decisions, and when richer farmers still receive four times more in subsidies than poorer ones. What is even more important is that a ‘Europe of solidarity’ should have a dimension beyond the materialistic. This means that we must return to our Christian roots and values. The latter will strengthen Europe not only over the next few years, but also for centuries. This is my wish to you all before Christmas."@en1
