"Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, I shall begin by congratulating the rapporteur, Mr Sturdy, on this important, opportune and highly pertinent report, which, in my view, deserves the full support of this Parliament.
Indeed, the European Union should give high priority to reducing unjustified and excessive non-tariff barriers to international trade and foreign investment. This is, firstly, because it is a constitutional guideline: Article 206 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union explicitly mentions the progressive dismantling of restrictions on international trade and foreign investment, including the removal of non-tariff barriers. The second reason is that it is in our interests, given that some of our most important trade partners, like Japan, China, and Russia, retain a large number of non-tariff barriers which limit the opportunities of our companies in their markets. These companies expect our support for growth and employment within the Union."@en1
