"Mr President, I agree with the report’s author, Mr Sturdy, that the broad range of non-tariff measures used in international trade complicates relationships between individual countries and economic groupings. I firmly believe, however, that we must look for correct and fair solutions primarily at the global level, since, as the report’s author states, many of these measures, such as the technical standards and certification applying to health protection, are legitimate by nature. At the same time, however, measures are often applied that have an unambiguously protectionist nature, and we should unite to eliminate these. This is in the interests of all major economies, and a common platform for exchanging views and seeking solutions therefore offers the best chance of success."@en1
