"Mr President, I was unpleasantly surprised by the scandal involving fake organic products and especially by the size of the chain that sells these products throughout Europe. It is a wake-up call not only for Romania and Italy, the countries from which the raw materials were obtained, but for the EU as a whole.
Given that around 700 000 tonnes of fake products labelled as organic were sold across Europe, I fear the impact this will have on consumers, and I am particularly concerned about how this incident will affect the entire food sector.
We consistently advocate the need for correct and complete information for consumers, but this time the measures we are going to take will need to reassure consumers that this type of incident will not be repeated. Tighter control and stricter monitoring of transactions involving organic product are required within the EU. Moreover, from now on we must be much more careful to ensure that such incidents do not occur in other sectors as well."@en1
