"Mr President, on 11 October 2011 the former Prime Minister of Ukraine, Yulia Tymoshenko, was found guilty and sentenced to seven years in prison. In addition, the court banned her from all public functions for a period of three years and obliged her to pay compensation to Naftohaz. Since that day, the former Prime Minister has been remanded in prison waiting for further court proceedings. On 1 December 2011, the Court of Appeals rejected Tymoshenko’s appeal, and also denied her release for health reasons.
Subsequent court rulings show that Ukraine’s President and his advisors have decided not to respond to the European Union’s proposals regarding, inter alia, changes to criminal law and the dismissal of Tymoshenko’s case or the granting of her appeal. The guilty verdict and her remand in custody shows that domestic policy issues are more important to the Party of Regions. Keeping the former Prime Minister in prison means Ukraine is effectively isolated in the West. However, the refusal by Parliament, under the control of Yanukovych, to amend the criminal code, along with the subsequent court proceedings and the rejection of the appeal, show that the authorities have no intention of releasing the former Prime Minister, who is being held in prison under scandalous conditions, with limited access to her.
