"Mr President, just a few weeks ago the European Commission placed the Baltic-Adriatic axis on the list of the major projects to be supported in the coming years. This north-south axis, which is nearly 2 000 km in length, links up nearly 50 million people in ten EU Member States. It covers 85 conurbations and commercial centres, 138 sea ports and internal waterways as well as 28 border crossings with third countries, and with a freight volume of around 24 million tonnes per year is one of the main Alpine crossing points. These facts make it very clear what a positive effect the Baltic-Adriatic axis will have for the countries concerned. It will bring the eastern Member States of the EU closer to the centre of Europe and provide them with better links, which will result not only in economic growth in the adjoining countries but also in a strengthening of the internal market. In addition to a further opportunity for shifting freight from road to rail, it will also dramatically cut travel times for passenger transport. This opens up new prospects for tourism, and thus offers us all a chance to get to know each other better."@en1
