"Mr President, whilst the European Union announces that it is going to devote EUR 80 000 million to research, the Government of the Valencian Community in Spain has withdrawn funding, to the point of it being exhausted, from the Prince Felipe Research Centre for biomedical research, a centre that came into being through European Union Structural Funds.
I am reporting this here as it has become an indecent paradox, as whilst EUR 5 million cannot be found for this research centre, for its research programmes into cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s, there is EUR 15 million for Formula 1 and EUR 3.5 million for a golf tournament.
Maybe this Parliament should indicate to the Member States that the crisis cannot be used to justify everything, the actions of inhumane governments even less so, and certainly that austerity should not be the door to politicians committing indecencies.
These are the paradoxes we cannot tolerate, and the European Union should take these into account, so that these types of issues do not occur in some Member States and regions."@en1
