"Mr President, many of my constituents will be amazed to learn that a right to a lawyer or a phone call needs a directive in the European Union. We are fortunate in the UK to have comprehensive legal rights. My constituents may well just ask themselves what type of Union their country is part of.
Where they actually see the EU fall down – and this has terribly been mentioned by some of my colleagues this evening – is the European Arrest Warrant, where British citizens are brought before British courts who are powerless to take any action to stop what they can clearly see is unfair treatment by other EU countries. The need for this directive shows that their legal systems are not up to scratch. When are we going to protect ourselves and leave the European Union?"@en1
